The Meaning Behind Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is one of those rare moments in the year where we pause and reflect on something we often take for granted — the role of mothers in our lives.
It is not just a date on the calendar. It is a reminder of care, sacrifice, guidance, and unconditional love that shapes who we become.
For many people, it is a day filled with emotion. A mix of gratitude, memory, and appreciation for everything a mother represents — whether that is a biological mother, a grandmother, a stepmother, or a maternal figure who played that role.
At Cloncaia, we see Mother’s Day as a moment of connection rather than just an occasion.
A moment where people express what is often left unsaid in everyday life.
For readers planning a gift around that feeling, our Mother’s Day gifts she’ll actually love guide connects the meaning of the celebration with personalized ideas made for Mom.
A Brief Look at Its Origins
From what we have read the ancient Greeks revered the mother as the giver of life.
Mother earth Gaia signified nature that gives birth to nature. It’s going to get a little geeky now but stick with us.
In Greek mythology her worship was passed to daughter Rhea.
Rhea was known as Titaness mother of gods zeus, hades, hera and others.
The Ancient Romans
The Romans had a festival called Hilaria in honour of mother goddess Cybele which was 250 years before christ was born. Cybele symbolized nature and fertility. The Hilaria festival seems to have been held in March on the calendar each year.
The festival had games, theatre, parades and sacrifices they were a fan of at the time but these were made at her temple in Palatine Hill in Rome.
Interestingly in latin Hilaria means ‘’the cheerful ones’’ ‘’joyful’’.
There were no personalized gifts back in the day but there were offerings of cakes, flowers, honey and festivals had music, dancing and presumably they put a big feast.
Modern Times
In moderns times mother’s day is celebrated at different times in different countries.
Some countries go all in, some countries don’t have the same tradition.
In Ethiopia mother’s day is celebrated for 3 days interestingly enough. Hats off.
A lot of countries introduced the concept of a Mother’s Day celebration at different times in their history.
In Spain this is called – ‘Dia de la Madre’ – which we like as it translates ‘ Day of the Mother ‘.
Mother’s Day – United Kingdom
In the U.K. historically the day used to be called ‘’Mothering Sunday’’ in the 1600s.
People returned to their ‘’mother church’’ for a special service.
Over the course of time a tradition set in of giving mothers flowers & homemade treats.
Flowers must the one of the oldest gifts in the world and still used to this day.
Mother’s Day – United States
A lovely story is that of Ann Reeves Jarvis. She wanted to create a day that honoured all mothers.
She campaigned for years and Mother’s Day became a national holiday in 1914 and it was signed into law.
It’s an incredible story. An article in Britannica regarding it's origin has some interesting reading.
A Note From Us at Cloncaia
We believe meaningful gifts come from understanding the person you are giving them to.
Mother’s Day is not about “buying something.”
It is about expressing something real.
Whether it is a shared memory, a name, a message, or a photo — the most powerful gifts are the ones that carry emotion and story.
That is why meaning and personal connection matter so much in how people celebrate this day.
When the moment calls for a gift, browse our Mother’s Day gifts collection, or compare practical ideas in our thoughtful Mother’s Day gifts guide.

It is encouraging to see that mothers have long been revered, honoured traditions do change from culture to culture but ‘Mama’ has long been respected and it’s the way it should be.
Nowadays, people celebrate Mother’s Day in many ways, from simple traditions to more personal expressions of appreciation.
In mexico, Dia De La Madras is celebrated on the 10th of may & is a big deal in mexico. Here's a nice article in the BBC.
